OUR STORY
Hi, we're Darren and Becca Christensen, founders of ModMod.
In 2012, we ran the numbers and it didn’t look good. We had spreadsheets running all the different debt payoff methods but we couldn’t find a way to improve our family's life for at least a decade in the best case scenario.
Our 4 year old house, which by all accounts should be gaining equity, was instead already falling apart. The back half of our neighborhood was sold off to a cheaper developer, so we were actually upside down on the house.
We thought we were making a smart investment by buying a house.
By the end of that year we went all-in on a Hail Mary attempt to set ourselves on a better trajectory. We sold everything possible on Craigslist and borrowed money from friends in order to take the loss on the house and buy the roughest piece of property out in the country that we could find.
We then built a tiny house and all told, were able to cut our living expenses by 80%.
We were out of debt in 5 years and for the last 12 years, we've perfected building extremely durable and efficient housing, doing so very affordably. Darren started in real estate as an investor rehabbing and flipping homes. He quickly identified all failure points in homes as he fixed them and built them back better. Determined that there had to be a better way, Darren started ground up construction of homes and became fascinated with the building science and practices that make for an exceptionally long lived, healthy and comfortable home. When he found the limits of what he could do himself, he started to develop using prefab homes. Darren has always had a penchant for efficiency and found that even in the prefab industry, there were significant obstacles. Again, thinking that there had to be a better way, he came to the conclusion that most of the obstacles could be solved by building smaller. Not only that, but he could help so many more people in the process.
ModMod was born.
At ModMod, we produce exceptionally durable, efficient and affordable buildings and we build them quickly. We are very purposeful with the design as it all comes down to the efficiency of the overall build. Even our dimensions are what they are to maximize the use of readily available building products, meaning less cuts, less waste and a quicker build. We even have an employee bonus program that rewards finding more efficient building practices that don't compromise quality.
We realize most people can’t or won’t take the journey we did, but they sure as heck can take advantage of our knowledge and expertise to build out the infrastructure that sets up investors, developers and tenants alike for success.
Here at ModMod we’ve got some big plans to help make America affordable again, build community and change some lives while we’re at it.
